Eligibility Criteria

For most subjects, including Hindi, English, Economics, Sociology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Commerce, History, Geography, Zoology, Botany, Psychology, Political Science, Education, Sanskrit, Home Science, Law, Statistics and the agriculture-related subjects, candidates need to meet the following qualification.

  • A Master's degree in the relevant, related or allied subject from a recognised Indian university with at least 55 percent marks, or an equivalent grade where a grading system is followed, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.
  • Along with the above, candidates must have qualified the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the University Grants Commission or CSIR, or an equivalent test accredited by the UGC such as SLET or SET.
  • Candidates who hold a PhD degree awarded under the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil/PhD Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016, and any amendments made from time to time, will be exempted from the NET/SLET/SET requirement, subject to conditions specified in the regulations regarding the mode of PhD registration, evaluation by external examiners, an open viva-voce, and publication and presentation of research papers.
  • NET/SLET/SET is not required for disciplines in which UGC or CSIR does not conduct these tests.
  • As an alternative route, a PhD obtained from a foreign university ranked among the top 500 in the QS World University Ranking, the Times Higher Education Ranking, or the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities is also accepted.

For Art/Drawing and Painting, Music Vocal, Music Instrumental (Sitar) and Music Instrumental (Tabla), candidates need a Master's degree in the relevant subject with 55 percent marks along with NET/SLET/SET or an exempting PhD as described above. Alternatively, a traditional or professional artist with an outstanding professional record who holds a Bachelor's degree, has trained under a well-known traditional master or artist, has been a Grade A artist on All India Radio or Doordarshan, and can explain the discipline with sound reasoning and adequate knowledge, is also eligible.

SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), and Divyang candidates falling under specified disability categories get a 5 percent relaxation in the qualifying percentage at postgraduate level, that is, the eligibility mark comes down from 55 percent to 50 percent. PhD holders who were awarded their degree before 19 September 1991 also get the same 5 percent relaxation. A grade considered equivalent to 55 percent at the postgraduate level in any recognised university's grading system will be treated as valid. The subject-wise list of allied and equivalent subjects is published in the detailed advertisement on the official website and should be checked carefully before applying.

Age Limit

The age of candidates is calculated as on 1 July 2026, and the upper age limit for the post is 62 years. An application will not be accepted if the date of birth is not mentioned in the form, or if the candidate is more than 62 years of age as on the reckoning date. Only the date of birth recorded in the High School or equivalent examination certificate will be accepted as proof of age.

Pay Scale

Selected candidates will be placed in Level 10 of the pay matrix, with a pay scale ranging from Rs. 57,700 to Rs. 1,82,400 per month.

Selection Process and Exam Pattern

Selection to the post of Assistant Professor will be made through a merit list prepared from a written examination carrying 360 marks and an interview carrying 40 marks, taking the total to 400 marks.

  • The written exam has 120 objective type (multiple choice) questions, of which 30 questions are on general knowledge and 90 questions are on the concerned subject.
  • The duration of the written exam is 2 hours.
  • Each question carries 4 options, and candidates must darken the circle of the single most suitable answer with a black ball point pen.
  • 3 marks are awarded for every correct answer, while 1 mark is deducted for a wrong answer or for darkening more than one circle against a question.
  • Question papers are printed in both Hindi and English, except for language subjects, which are set only in that particular language.

If two or more candidates end up with an equal merit score, the candidate with higher marks in the written exam will be ranked higher. If the written exam marks are also equal, marks obtained in the interview will be considered, followed by the percentage secured in the essential qualification along with PhD and NET/JRF combinations, and then postgraduate marks. If all these are still equal, the older candidate will be placed higher in the merit list.
