Anyone with a graduate degree and an age between 20 and 33 years on 1 January 2027 can apply, but the notice is strict about a few things that cost candidates their applications every year, and this guide walks through each of them.

One Application, One RRB: The Rule That Decides Your Form
Most of the trouble with railway applications starts with the choice of board. The notice allows only one application to only one RRB. If you apply to a second board, or even send a second form to the same board, every application is rejected and you can be debarred from future RRB and RRC examinations. The notice also treats small changes in details across forms as an attempt to apply more than once.
Choosing the Right RRB and Zone
The choice of RRB is final once made and cannot be edited even in the modification window. Before choosing, look at Annexure-B and compare how many vacancies each board has in your category. Under the board you pick, you will also give an order of preference for railway zones. Zones are allotted according to merit, medical standard and vacancy position, although the notice keeps the right to allot a zone you did not opt for if the administration needs it.
Think About Posting Before You Apply
A railway servant is ordinarily kept on the railway where the first posting is made, and the notice says no request for transfer to another railway will be registered until the new employee has completed at least 5 to 10 years of service. The competent authority can still transfer an employee to another department, railway or project in or out of India. Choose the board with this in mind.
Vacancy Details
The detailed distribution is given RRB-wise and zone-wise in Annexure-B. Category-wise, the 1265 posts break up as follows. The 133 ex-servicemen posts are a horizontal reservation, so they are counted inside these figures and not added on top.
| Category | UR | SC | ST | OBC | EWS | Total | ExSM (included) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vacancies | 542 | 176 | 104 | 296 | 147 | 1265 | 133 |
One thing to note: the at a glance table on page 3 of the notice shows 1215 total vacancies, while the Annexure-B table, whose rows and columns add up correctly, shows 1265. This article uses the Annexure-B figure. The notice also says vacancies are provisional and may rise, fall or even become nil for a particular railway or community, so the final numbers can differ.

Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
The minimum qualification is a graduate degree from a recognized university or its equivalent. You must hold it on the closing date of the online application, which is 25 November 2026. Candidates who are still waiting for the result of their final examination should not apply. If the date of issue on your degree or provisional certificate falls after the closing date, you will need the consolidated mark sheet or the semester-wise mark sheets showing the date of result declaration, and a certificate from the board or university if the date is missing.
Nationality
A candidate must be a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire or Ethiopia, or from Vietnam, with the intention of settling permanently in India. Candidates in the Nepal, Bhutan and migrant groups need a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India, which is checked at document verification.
Who Cannot Apply
- Candidates currently debarred by any RRB or RRC, for life or for a period that has not ended
- Candidates dismissed from service by the Government of India, a State Government, a PSU or any other government organization
- Candidates who suppress facts or give false information, whose candidature can be cancelled at any stage, even after appointment
Serving employees of Central or State Government departments, Railways and PSUs may apply directly, after informing their employer. Shortlisted candidates must produce a No Objection Certificate from the employer within the prescribed time or at document verification, otherwise candidature is cancelled.
Suitability for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities
Annexure-A marks the Station Master post as not suitable for any of the five disability categories listed there (VI, HI, LD, OD and MD).
Age Limit and Relaxation
The age limit is 20 to 33 years as on 1 January 2027. The notice states it as a range of birth dates, both dates inclusive. The earliest birth dates already include the community relaxation for OBC-NCL, SC and ST candidates.
| Category | Born not earlier than | Born not later than |
|---|---|---|
| UR and EWS | 02 January 1994 | 01 January 2007 |
| OBC-NCL | 02 January 1991 | 01 January 2007 |
| SC and ST | 02 January 1989 | 01 January 2007 |
Other Age Relaxations
| Group | Relaxation or maximum age |
|---|---|
| OBC-NCL | 3 years |
| SC and ST | 5 years |
| Ex-servicemen with more than 6 months of service after attestation | 3 years for UR and EWS, 6 years for OBC-NCL, 8 years for SC and ST, after deducting length of service |
| Serving Group C and erstwhile Group D railway staff with at least 3 years of service, including substitutes | 40 years (UR and EWS), 43 years (OBC-NCL), 45 years (SC and ST) |
| Staff of quasi-administrative offices of Railways such as canteens, cooperative societies and institutes | Length of service rendered or 5 years, whichever is less |
| Women who are widowed, divorced or judicially separated and not remarried | 35 years (UR and EWS), 38 years (OBC-NCL), 40 years (SC and ST) |
Relaxations are not cumulative: a candidate eligible on more than one ground gets only the highest one. SC, ST and OBC-NCL candidates who apply against unreserved vacancies get no age relaxation. Your date of birth in the form must match your Class 10 certificate, and any difference leads to disqualification.
Medical Standard for Station Master
The post carries medical standard A-2, which means the candidate must be physically fit in all respects, with the visual acuity shown below. Failing the medical means no alternate appointment is offered, so it is worth getting your eyes tested before you pay the fee.
| Test | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Distant vision | 6/9 and 6/9 without glasses (no fogging test) |
| Near vision | Sn 0.6 and 0.6 without glasses |
| Other tests | Must pass colour vision, binocular vision, night vision and myopic vision tests |
Candidates who have had Lasik or any other surgery to correct a refractive error are not eligible for this post and must give a self-declaration at document verification. Ex-servicemen follow different medical standards under Para 534 of the Indian Railway Medical Manual, and use a separate vision certificate format. Every candidate must also carry a vision certificate from an eye specialist on the day of the CBAT; without it, entry to the CBAT is refused. Someone who fails the first medical may be offered one final medical appeal on payment of the prescribed charges.
Application Fee and Refund Rules
| Candidate Category | Fee | Refund on appearing in CBT |
|---|---|---|
| All candidates except those listed below | Rs. 500 | Rs. 400, after deducting bank charges |
| Female, transgender, ex-servicemen, SC, ST, minority communities and EBC candidates | Rs. 250 | Rs. 250, after deducting bank charges |
Payment is online only, through internet banking, debit card, credit card or UPI, and the service charges are paid by the candidate. An application without the prescribed fee is rejected. The notice also states that your application is accepted only after the fee payment is confirmed through email and SMS.
How the Refund Reaches You
Refunds go only to a bank account seeded with the candidate's Aadhaar number. During the application you will validate your Aadhaar and the linked account is shown for confirmation. If no account is seeded, the portal redirects you to the NPCI site for linking. A candidate without a bank account may give a family member's Aadhaar-seeded account. The notice puts the whole responsibility for a valid, working account on the candidate, and no refund is made for rejected, incomplete or unsubmitted applications.
Fee Concessions: Minority and EBC Claims
Minority communities for this purpose are Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Zoroastrians (Parsis). A minority candidate claiming the Rs. 250 fee must submit an affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper at document verification. EBC means a family income below Rs. 50,000 a year, proved by an income certificate, a BPL card, a Central Government poverty alleviation certificate or an Izzat MST issued by Railways, and the document must be dated on or before 25 November 2026. The notice stresses that EBC is different from OBC and EWS and brings only the fee concession, not job reservation.
Selection Process
There are four stages, and selection is purely on merit: a single stage Computer Based Test (CBT), a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), Document Verification (DV) and a Medical Examination. There is no physical test for this post.
Shortlisting Between Stages
- CBT to CBAT: candidates equal to 8 times the vacancies, RRB-wise, are shortlisted from each community on the basis of CBT merit.
- CBAT to DV and Medical: shortlisting is RRB-wise at 1:1 of the vacancies, on combined merit of 70 percent CBT and 30 percent CBAT. Only candidates who pass the CBAT are considered.
- Tie-breaking: the older candidate gets the higher rank; if age is also equal, alphabetical order of the given name (not surname) decides.
- Normalization: marks are normalized when the CBT is held in multiple shifts.
CBT Exam Pattern
| Section | Questions (1 mark each) |
|---|---|
| Basic Science, Mathematical and Analytical Capability | 60 |
| Logical Capability | 20 |
| Mental Reasoning | 20 |
| Total (120 minutes) | 100 |
Every wrong answer costs one third of a mark. The notice calls the section split indicative, so small variations in the real paper are possible. Questions are available in English, Hindi and 13 regional languages: Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. The language is chosen in the application and cannot be changed later, and questions appear in your chosen language and in English.
CBT Syllabus
- Basic Science and Mathematics (30 marks): number system, ratio and proportion, averages, percentages, profit and loss, time, speed and distance, time and work, algebra, linear equations, LCM and HCF, geometry, trigonometry, area and volume, probability and statistics at basic level, plus units and measurement, mass, weight and density, work, power, energy, friction, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines.
- Data Analysis and Interpretation (30 marks): drawing inferences from text, tables and graphs, charts, scatter plots, pie charts, Venn diagrams, data sufficiency and data arrangement.
- Logical Capability (20 marks): binary logic, syllogism, clocks and calendars, assumptions, blood relations, family tree and logic puzzles, along with English reading comprehension passages.
- Mental Reasoning (20 marks): analogy, series completion, coding-decoding, ranking and arrangement problems.
The notice describes these topics as illustrative and not exhaustive. Minimum qualifying marks in the CBT are 40 percent for UR and EWS, 30 percent for OBC-NCL and SC, and 25 percent for ST, and the same applies to ex-servicemen according to their community.
CBAT Details
The aptitude test is in English and Hindi only, has no negative marking, and needs a minimum T-Score of 42 in each test battery. This is the same for every category, with no relaxation for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS or ex-servicemen. For preparation material, the notice points candidates to the Traffic and Psychology section of the RDSO website under Psychology and Candidate's Corner. The RDSO Website carries it.
Document Verification and Medical
Original certificates are checked at DV along with two sets of self-attested photocopies, and no extra time is given to anyone who does not bring them. Absent candidates lose their candidature. Appointment still depends on passing the medical examination, final verification of educational and community certificates, and verification of antecedents and character. The RRB only recommends names; the offer of appointment comes from the respective Zonal Railway, and selection does not by itself give a right to appointment.
Pay, Training and Service Conditions
Station Master is a Level 6 post in the 7th Pay Commission with an initial pay of Rs. 35,400. Selected candidates go through prescribed training and receive only a stipend during that period. They may need to execute a surety or indemnity bond at joining, and once appointed they are liable for active service in the Railway Engineers' Unit of the Territorial Army.
Reservation Certificates You Must Have Ready
Community status on the closing date, 25 November 2026, is what counts, and a later change is not recognized. Certificates are checked in original at DV, and a claim that cannot be proved means the candidate is considered under the unreserved category, if otherwise eligible.
- SC and ST: certificate in the format of Annexure-I.
- OBC-NCL: certificate in the format of Annexure-II, issued on or after 1 April 2026 and not later than the closing date, plus the self-declaration of Annexure-II A at DV. The caste must be in the central OBC list.
- EWS: Income and Asset Certificate in the format of Annexure-III for the financial year 2025-26. Family gross income must be below Rs. 8 lakh, and families owning 5 acres of agricultural land, a residential flat of 1000 sq. ft. or a plot of the specified size are excluded.
- Ex-servicemen: the declaration in Annexure-VII A, and serving personnel need the employment certificate of Annexure-VII.
Special instructions apply to certain Bihar-based candidates under Supreme Court judgements mentioned in paragraphs 11.7 and 11.8 of the notice, who must bring a recent caste certificate. SC and ST candidates who want a free sleeper class railway pass for exam travel must say so in the application and upload the certificate as a PDF under 400 KB.
How to Apply for RRB Station Master 2026
The link for the form will be made live on the unified official RRB website, and the notice warns against fake websites and touts. Follow these steps once the form opens.
- Read the full CEN 08/2026 on the official RRB website and check Annexure-A and Annexure-B to confirm that you meet the education, age and medical requirements.
- Keep your own mobile number and an active personal email ID ready, because OTPs are sent to them during account creation and neither can be changed later.
- Open the application link given on the unified official RRB website and create an account, or log in with the same credentials if you already created an account for a CEN notified in 2024, 2025 or 2026.
- Authenticate your identity through DigiLocker or Aadhaar, since alternate photo IDs lead to stricter scrutiny at every stage.
- Select one RRB only and give your order of preference for the railway zones under that RRB.
- Fill in your name, parents' names and date of birth exactly as in your Class 10 certificate, then choose your medium of examination and enter any reservation or concession details.
- Capture your live photograph when the application module asks for it, and upload your signature as a JPG or JPEG file of 30 KB to 49 KB.
- Submit the application, pay the fee online through internet banking, debit card, credit card or UPI on or before 27 November 2026, and validate your Aadhaar so that any refund can reach your bank account.
- Wait for the confirmation sent by email and SMS after successful payment, note down your registration number, and use the modification window from 28 November to 07 December 2026 only if a correction is needed.
Live Photo and Signature Requirements
Live Photograph
There is no photograph to upload. The application module captures a live photo through a webcam or the front camera of a phone. Sit against a plain white background, wear non-white clothing, preferably dark, keep the camera at eye level and look straight ahead with eyes open. Do not wear a cap, mask or glasses. Your head should fill at least half of the frame and the area below the chest should not show. Taking a picture of a printed or digital photograph leads to summary rejection. Your appearance during the whole recruitment should match this photo, and if the photo does not match your photo ID, an online-generated form (Annexure-VIII) must be attested by a Gazetted Officer and uploaded.
Signature
| Specification | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Written by | The candidate only, with black ink on white paper |
| Style | Running handwriting, not block, capital or disjointed letters |
| Format and size | JPG or JPEG, 30 KB to 49 KB, minimum 140 by 60 pixels, scanned at 100 DPI or more |
| Placement | Centred in the 50 mm by 20 mm scan box on the form |
A thumb impression, a blank image, a signature by someone else or a partly visible signature is a ground for rejection. The same signature must be used at the CBT, CBAT, document verification, medical examination and appointment.
Exam Day Rules to Keep in Mind
- Bring the e-call letter and an original valid photo ID, along with a colour passport photograph not older than two months. No call letter is sent by post.
- City intimation is given about 10 days before the exam and the e-call letter is available about 4 days before. Exam city, centre, date and shift cannot be changed.
- Mobile phones, watches, calculators, belts, bags, caps, water bottles and food items are not allowed, and a cloak room may not be available. Pens are provided at the venue.
- Do not apply henna or mehandi, as it interferes with biometric capture.
- The self-declaration paragraph must be written and signed at the exam hall in front of the invigilator, with left thumb impression; writing it in advance or signing in capital letters means rejection.
Important Instructions and Common Reasons for Rejection
- Your own mobile number and personal email ID must stay active through the whole recruitment. The RRBs will not change them at any stage.
- Fill in the account details with care, because corrections are not allowed after account creation.
- Submit the form well before the last day, as RRBs take no responsibility if the website is overloaded near the deadline.
- Applications are rejected for multiple submissions, a live photo or signature that breaks the rules, a name on any debarred list, or any other irregularity found later. The fee is not refunded on rejection.
- Any unfair means, impersonation or banned item can lead to lifetime debarment from all RRB and RRC examinations and dismissal from service if already appointed.
