The notification describes the job requirement as providing skilled assistance to the scientific and technical staff or performing any other tasks assigned by the competent authority.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility

The applicant must be a citizen of India. The qualification pattern is the same for every post code, only the trade changes. You must have passed SSC or 10th Standard (or equivalent) with science subjects and secured at least 55 percent marks, and you must satisfy any one of these three routes in the trade of the post you choose:

  • An ITI certificate or a national or state trade certificate in that trade; or
  • Two years of full time experience as an apprentice trainee from a recognized institution in that trade; or
  • Three years of work experience in that trade in a Ministry, Department, Organization, Public Sector Undertaking or Autonomous Body under the Government of India, a State or a Union Territory.

A few fine points in the notification deserve attention. The trade must match the post. Experience on a part time basis, on daily wages or as visiting or guest faculty is not counted for shortlisting. Where experience is required, it is counted only after you acquired the minimum educational qualification. Final results of your qualification must have been declared on or before 18 November 2026, and the board or institution must be recognized by the Government of India or an approved regulatory body.

If your university or board gives CGPA or similar grades, you have to convert them to percentage using the official formula and upload a copy of that formula. If you claim an equivalent qualification, you must upload the order or letter, with its number and date, under which it is treated as equivalent. Without it, the screening committee can reject the claim.

Meeting the minimum is not a guarantee of being called. The screening committee will use its own criteria to shortlist candidates for the trade test, so the notification advises you to list every additional qualification and relevant experience in the form, with supporting documents.

Age Limit and Relaxation

You must be at least 18 years old and not more than 28 years as on 18 November 2026. Relaxation in the upper age limit is available as follows.

Category Relaxation in Upper Age Limit
SC and ST 5 years, only for posts reserved for them
OBC (NCL) 3 years, only for posts reserved for them
Regular government, CSIR, autonomous body and PSU employees Up to 5 years, for those with 3 years of continuous service in the same line or an allied cadre
PwBD 10 years (15 for SC and ST, 13 for OBC), if the post is identified as suitable for the disability
Widows, divorced and judicially separated women who are not remarried Up to 35 years (up to 40 years for SC and ST candidates for posts reserved for them)
Ex-servicemen 3 years after deducting the military service from actual age

Pay attention to one rule that catches many candidates out: SC, ST and OBC (NCL) candidates who apply against unreserved posts get no age relaxation and are treated like general candidates, although SC and ST candidates still keep the fee exemption. For PwBD candidates, the benchmark disability must be 40 percent or more and the certificate must be in the prescribed format. Sons, daughters and dependents of ex-servicemen do not get the ex-servicemen age relaxation.

Pay Scale and Service Benefits

The Technician (1) post is placed in Pay Level 2, with a scale of Rs. 19,900 to 63,200. The notification gives approximate total emoluments of Rs. 37,260 per month at the minimum of the scale, including House Rent Allowance as admissible at Mysuru headquarters.

Beyond the pay, selected candidates get Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Transport Allowance as applicable to CSIR employees at the place of posting. Medical reimbursement, Leave Travel Concession and Children's Education Allowance are available as per CSIR and Government of India rules. CSIR accommodation can be allotted subject to availability, and HRA is not paid if council or government accommodation is used. New entrants are covered by the National Pension System, and technical support staff can seek career advancement under the Assessment Promotion scheme.

The selected persons must be ready to work under the Director at the Mysuru headquarters or at the CFTRI resource centres in Hyderabad, Mumbai and Lucknow, and they can be transferred to any CSIR laboratory in India when needed. Everyone is placed on probation, which can be extended or shortened by the competent authority.

Application Fee

A non-refundable fee of Rs. 500 applies wherever it is payable, and it is paid through the SBI Collect portal under the payment category Application Fees-Regular Appointment. Candidates from SC, ST, PwBD, Women and Ex-Servicemen categories are exempted, subject to uploading the relevant document that supports their claim. Anyone in a non-exempt category whose application arrives without the fee will be rejected, and no representation will be entertained.

Once paid, the fee cannot be refunded or held in reserve for another recruitment. If you apply for more than one post code, the fee has to be paid separately for each post code.

How the Selection Works

The process has three filters, and only the last one decides the merit list.

Screening and Trade Test

A Screening Committee set up by the Director first scrutinizes all applications received in time. Those found eligible are invited for a Trade Test in the relevant trade, which is qualifying in nature. The cut-off for the Trade Test and for Paper I will be decided by the Selection Committee and put on the CFTRI website before the tests.

Written Examination Pattern

Those who clear the Trade Test sit a competitive written examination of three papers. It is OMR based or computer based, objective multiple choice, set in English and Hindi except the English language questions, and the standard is SSC plus ITI or XII level. In total there are 150 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes.

Paper Subject Questions Marks Time Negative Marking
Paper I (qualifying) Mental Ability Test 50 100 (2 marks each) 1 hour None
Paper II General Awareness 25 75 (3 marks each) 30 minutes 1 mark per wrong answer
Paper II English Language 25 75 (3 marks each) 1 mark per wrong answer
Paper III Concerned Subject 50 150 (3 marks each) 1 hour 1 mark per wrong answer

The Mental Ability Test covers general intelligence, quantitative aptitude, reasoning, problem solving and situational judgement. The concerned subject paper is based on the advertised qualification in the relevant trade of the post. Papers II and III are checked only for candidates who reach the minimum threshold in Paper I, and the final merit list is prepared only on marks in Papers II and III, which together carry 300 marks.

Tie-Breaking Order

If two or more candidates have equal aggregate marks, the tie is resolved in this order until one candidate is placed above the other:

  1. Higher marks in the papers of the concerned subject or trade
  2. Lesser negative marks in the papers of the concerned subject or trade
  3. Lesser negative marks in the papers considered for the merit list
  4. Older date of birth
  5. Earlier acquisition of the essential degree
  6. Alphabetical order of first names

Photo, Signature and Live Photo Rules

The signature you give at the exam should match the uploaded one, or you may be disqualified. The portal has a Help me Upload and Resize option if you struggle with the file size.

The live photo is a separate requirement and cannot be uploaded as a file. It has to be captured on the spot with a webcam or through the QR code on your phone. Look straight at the camera, avoid reflections, caps and coloured glasses, and blink once when the prompt turns green so the system captures the picture.
