Eligibility Criteria

District And School Requirement

Admission to Class VI in a JNV is strictly district specific. A candidate can generally apply only for the JNV located in the district where they are a bonafide resident and are currently studying in Class V. A candidate residing in one district but studying in a neighbouring district may still apply for the JNV of their district of residence, provided the school is within 10 km of their residence and this distance is verified by NVS. Candidates who have already passed Class V, repeated it, or skipped Classes III or IV are not eligible.

Age Limit

The candidate must be born between 1 May 2015 and 31 July 2017, both dates inclusive. A birth certificate issued by a competent government authority must be produced at the time of admission if provisionally selected, and this applies to all categories including SC, ST, OBC and Divyang candidates.

Academic Requirement

The candidate must be studying in Class V for the entire 2026-27 academic session in a government, government-aided or other recognized school, or holding the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) 'B' certificate. The candidate must also have studied and passed Classes III, IV and V, spending one full academic session in each, from a government, government-aided or recognized school.

Repeat Candidates

A candidate who has already appeared for JNVST earlier, for any reason, is not eligible to apply again. NVS validates application data against previous years to identify repeaters, and such candidatures are cancelled at any stage if detected.

Reservation Of Seats

At least 75 percent of the seats in a district are filled by candidates provisionally selected from rural areas, with the remaining open seats filled on merit from both rural and urban candidates. Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates get reservation in proportion to their district population, subject to a national minimum of 15 percent for SC and 7.5 percent for ST, and a combined maximum of 50 percent. OBC candidates from the Central List get 27 percent reservation, over and above SC and ST quotas. A minimum of one-third of total seats are reserved for girls, and reservation is also provided for Divyang candidates, covering orthopedic, hearing and visual disabilities, dwarfism and acid attack victims, as per Government of India norms.

Documents Required After Provisional Selection

Candidates who are provisionally selected must submit the following documents at the time of admission for verification:

  • Birth certificate issued by a competent government authority
  • Residence certificate of the parent for the same district
  • Rural area certificate, where applicable, for rural quota candidates
  • Copy of the candidate's Aadhaar card
  • Head Master's certificate confirming study details and area (rural or urban) for Classes III, IV and V
  • Undertaking for migration
  • Disability certificate or UDID copy, if applicable
  • Caste or community certificate for SC, ST or Central List OBC candidates, if applicable
  • Transfer certificate from the parent school

JNVST 2027 Exam Pattern

The selection test is of two hours duration, held from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, and consists of 80 objective type questions worth 100 marks in total. Divyang candidates are given an additional 40 minutes.
