Age Limit

Age is calculated as on the last date of application. The limits differ for the Engineering streams and the Geology stream:

Category Max Age (Engineering Streams) Max Age (Geology Stream)

Pay Scale and Benefits

Selected candidates will be placed at the E1 level with a basic pay scale of Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 1,80,000. Along with a 3 percent annual increment, employees get allowances worth 35 percent of Basic Pay under the Cafeteria Approach, along with Dearness Allowance, HRA or Company Accommodation, Contributory Provident Fund, Conveyance Maintenance, Leave Encashment, Performance Related Pay, medical facility for self and dependents, Gratuity and other retirement benefits. ONGC states the overall compensation package works out to approximately Rs. 26 lakhs CTC.

Application Fee

Category Registration Fee
General / OBC (NCL) / EWS Rs. 1000
SC / ST / PwBD No Charges

The registration fee excludes convenience fee and bank commission plus GST, and must be paid online. It is non-refundable. Departmental candidates from ONGC also need to pay the fee, but it is reimbursable to them.

Selection Process

Selection is carried out in three stages:

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT)
  2. Personal Interview
  3. Medical Fitness Examination

Only candidates who clear all three stages are issued an offer of appointment. CBT scores are used to shortlist candidates for interview in a 1:5 ratio category-wise, though all candidates meeting the cut-off in a tie situation are shortlisted even beyond this ratio. Shortlisted candidates may also go through a Group Discussion, which is not of a qualifying nature. Final merit is based on combined CBT and Interview performance, weighted as below:

Parameter Marks
CBT Score 85
Interview 15
Total 100

To qualify, General, EWS and OBC candidates need a minimum of 45 percent in the CBT and 60 percent (9 out of 15 marks) in the Interview. SC, ST and PwBD candidates need a minimum of 40 percent in both the CBT and the Interview (6 out of 15 marks). Candidates who qualify at every stage then undergo medical examination as per ONGC's Medical Examination of Employees Rules before an offer of appointment is issued.

Exam Pattern

The CBT is an objective-type test of 2 hours duration, with no negative marking, comprising four sections:

Part Subject Number of Questions
I Concerned Domain (Petroleum / Mechanical / Chemical / Instrumentation / Geology) 40
II General Awareness 10
III Aptitude Test 25
IV English Language 10
Total   85

PwBD candidates get compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour, and those with Blindness or Locomotor disability may bring a scribe on production of the prescribed medical certificate. If the CBT is held across multiple sessions, scores are normalized to adjust for any difference in difficulty level.

The test will be conducted across 19 cities, including Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Jaipur and Bhubaneswar, among others. Candidates must indicate their preferred test centre at the time of application, and no change in this preference is allowed later.

Medical Standards

ONGC has specified a few salient medical conditions for this recruitment. Complete or partial colour blindness and night blindness are not acceptable for any of the advertised streams. Myopia, including cylinder, up to -4.00 D and Hypermetropia up to +4.00 D are acceptable. Correction with contact lenses or intraocular implants is allowed provided the prescribed standards are met. Full medical rules are available on the ONGC website.

Reservation for Persons with Benchmarked Disabilities

Identified benchmarked disability categories and reserved vacancies differ by stream. For example, in Mechanical Engineering, 3 vacancies under Category C-LC and 1 vacancy under Category D/E are reserved, both carried forward from previous advertisements. In Petroleum Engineering, 2 vacancies under Category C are reserved. In Chemical Engineering, 4 vacancies are reserved under Category C. In Instrumentation Engineering, 1 vacancy under Category B-HH is reserved, and in Geology, 2 vacancies under Category B and 1 under Category C are reserved. If a suitable PwBD candidate is not available in a given category, ONGC may consider candidates from other benchmarked disability categories by interchange, and if none is available even then, the reserved vacancy is filled by a candidate without benchmarked disability.
