Candidates who meet the higher eligibility norms for Level 5/4 or Level 3/2 may also apply for Level 1. However, sportspersons with Level 5/4 norms who apply only against Level 3/2 will be considered only for that level, and must submit an undertaking that they will not later claim a higher pay level based on sports achievements from before joining Railways.

Eligibility Criteria

Age Limit

The age limit is a strict minimum 18 years and maximum 25 years as on 1 January 2027. Only candidates born between 1 January 2002 and 1 January 2009 (both dates inclusive) can apply. There is no age relaxation for any community.

Sports Achievement Norms

Each level has its own minimum sports standard, and only performances from 1 April 2024 onward count:

  • Level 5/4: Representation in the Olympics (Senior), or at least a 3rd-place finish at the World Cup, World Championships, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympics, or Hockey Champions Trophy.
  • Level 3/2: Representation at World Cup, World Championships, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympics, or Champions Trophy level, or at least a 3rd-place finish at Commonwealth Championships, Asian Championships, South Asian Federation Games, World Railways (USIC) Championships, World University Games, National Championships, National Games, or Inter University Championships, or a 1st-place finish at the Federation Cup.
  • Level 1: Representation at Commonwealth Championships, Asian Championships, South Asian Federation Games, World Railways Championships, or World University Games, or at least a 3rd-place finish at the Federation Cup or National Championships, or representing a State with at least an 8th-place finish in Senior Nationals (except Marathon and Cross Country).

All qualifying championships must be conducted under recognized international, national, or state sports federations and recognized by the Railway Sports Promotion Board. Only Senior and Junior National Championships count; rural meets, festival meets, and similar tournaments are not considered. As per RBE 118/2025, certificates must come from federations recognized by MoYAS at the time the championship was held.

Additional Norms for Specific Games

Athletics gold medalists at Open Nationals, Inter State Championships, or Asian Championships may be considered for higher pay levels, and medal winners at National Inter State Senior Athletics may be considered for Level 2 posts. In Cricket, requirements range from India-A or India U-19 representation for Level 5/4 down to quarterfinalist or pre-quarterfinalist standing in Inter State Championships for lower levels. In Hockey (Men), participation in international tournaments of four or more nations, or a semifinal finish at Senior Nationals, may also be considered for certain pay levels.

Fee for candidates who are later found ineligible will not be refunded. Minority candidates claiming fee exemption must submit a self-declaration at the time of selection trials, and Economically Backward Class means a family income below Rs 50,000 per year, supported by an income certificate from an authorized officer.

Selection Process

There is no written examination for this recruitment. Selection runs through Document Verification and Trial, scored out of 100 marks:

Candidates must score at least 25 out of 40 in the trial itself to be declared fit; those declared unfit are not assessed further. On top of this, the overall qualifying marks required are 70 for Level 5/4, 65 for Level 3/2, and 60 for Level 1. If two candidates tie on marks, the younger candidate is given preference.

General Rules

  • Selected candidates will have to sign a 5-year Service Bond and must perform in their sports discipline for a minimum of 5 years, with performance reviewed during the first two years of probation.
  • No TA/DA or accommodation is provided for the selection trials, and candidates may need to stay for 2-3 days at their own arrangement.
  • Candidates already in service with a PSU or Government organization must produce a No Objection Certificate at the time of trial.
