Athletics carries the largest share with 18 posts spread across running events, hurdles, long jump, and javelin throw, each with its own position-wise breakup by gender. Eligibility Criteria
Nationality and Educational Qualification
Applicants must be citizens of India. The educational qualification depends on the post applied for.

This qualification must be held on or before 1 July 2026. A qualification obtained after that date will not count for this recruitment.
Sports Eligibility
Only candidates who meet one of the following criteria will be considered:
- Represented a state or the country in a national or international competition, or won a medal in Junior National Championships, Khelo India Youth Games (above 18 years), Khelo India Winter Games, Khelo India Para Games, Khelo India University Games, or the School Games Federation of India.
- Represented their university in Inter-University Tournaments conducted by the Inter-University Sports Boards.
- Represented their state school team in national school games conducted by the All India School Games Federation.
For chess specifically, a Grand Master title, an International Master title, or participation in a Chess Olympiad is considered, and the medal-winning performance in the National Team Chess Championship also counts.

Age relaxation of 5 years is available to UR and OBC candidates, and 10 years to SC and ST candidates, as per DOPT OM No. DOPT-1720781414772 dated 4 March 2024. This relaxation applies only to candidates who meet all other eligibility conditions and submit the certificate prescribed in Annexure C.
Selection Criteria and Preference Order
Preference among eligible candidates is decided in this order: international representation first, then senior or junior national championship medals, then inter-university competition medals, then Khelo India Youth, Winter, or Para Games medals, then State school national games medals, and finally participation without a medal at these levels in the same order.
Only sporting achievements from tournaments held between 1 January 2022 and 30 June 2026 will be considered. Candidates must also be clear in all doping tests conducted by WADA, NADA, or other relevant authorities, and must not have been disqualified or banned by a sports federation for disciplinary reasons. Any pending doping-related investigation must be disclosed in Annexure B.
In case of a tie, the candidate with the higher sporting achievement during the reckoning period is preferred; if the tie persists, the candidate with more cumulative medals during the same period is given preference.

Selection Process
Selection moves through the following stages:
- Scrutiny of all applications for nationality, age, and educational qualification.
- Shortlisting based on the candidate's best sporting performance between 1 January 2022 and 30 June 2026.
- Document verification before the selection committee, where candidates must bring original documents matching the attested photocopies submitted earlier.
- A Ground or Field Proficiency Test to assess proficiency in the candidate's sport.
- For Tax Assistant applicants specifically, a Data Entry Skill Test at 8000 key depressions per hour.
- Final selection strictly in order of merit, based on sporting performance and proficiency test marks combined.
Candidates already employed must submit a No Objection Certificate from their current employer at the document verification stage. No travelling allowance is paid for appearing at any stage of the process or for joining after selection.
How to Apply
This recruitment does not use an online application portal. The primary mode of application is a physical form sent by post, and candidates must additionally fill a Google Form to support processing.
- Download and fill the application form given in Annexure A of the official notice in capital letters using black or blue ink, and paste a recent colour passport size photograph attested by a Gazetted Officer.
- Attach attested photocopies of your identity proof, address proof, birth certificate, mark sheets and certificates of Class 10 and above, caste certificate if applicable, and all certificates of your sports achievements.
- Fill and attach the self declaration in Annexure B, the age relaxation certificate in Annexure C if claiming reservation, and the sports achievement form from Annexure D signed by the competent authority listed in the notice.
- Write the phrase APPLICATION FOR THE POST(S) OF ___ FOR RECRUITMENT OF MERITORIOUS SPORTS PERSONS IN INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT, WEST BENGAL AND SIKKIM on the envelope.
- Send the complete application by ordinary post, speed post, registered post, or courier to the Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, Headquarters, Personnel and Establishment, Kolkata, so that it reaches on or before 30 September 2026.
- Separately fill the Google Form linked in the official notice with your essential particulars, since this is an additional requirement and does not replace the physical application.
