Application Fee

The fee can be paid only through net banking of any bank, or through a Visa, Master or RuPay credit or debit card, or by UPI payment. No other mode of payment is accepted, and applications submitted without the prescribed fee are summarily rejected unless fee exemption is validly claimed. The fee, once paid, is not refunded under any circumstances and cannot be carried forward to any other examination.

Vacancy Details

The number of vacancies to be filled through the Engineering Services Examination 2027 is expected to be approximately 480, including 19 vacancies reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities. Of these 19 PwBD vacancies, 11 are for Locomotor Disability including Leprosy cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack victims and Muscular Dystrophy, 6 are for Hard of Hearing, 1 is for Low Vision, and 1 is for Specific Learning Disability and Mental Illness combined. The Commission has clearly stated that the total number of vacancies is liable to alteration, and reservation for SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwBD candidates will be applied as fixed by the Government of India.

Recruitment is made against four engineering categories, and a candidate can apply for admission under only one of these categories:

Each category covers several Group A and Group B services and posts, such as the Central Engineering Service, Indian Railway Management Service, Indian Defence Service of Engineers, Central Water Engineering Service, Central Power Engineering Service, Indian Telecommunication Service and Indian Radio Regulatory Service, along with other departmental services depending on the discipline chosen. The notification does not give a numeric vacancy split for each category or service at this stage. Eligibility Criteria

Nationality

A candidate must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal, or a subject of Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling here, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, certain East African countries, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India. Candidates in the last four categories need a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

Educational Qualification

Candidates must hold an engineering degree from a university incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature, or from an institution declared a deemed university, or from a recognised foreign university or institution. Candidates who have passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India), or equivalent qualifying examinations of certain other professional bodies as named in the notice, are also eligible, subject to conditions laid out in the notification regarding the date of admission to such courses. Candidates who are awaiting their final qualifying result, or who intend to appear at the qualifying exam, may also apply provisionally.

Age Limit

A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on 1 January 2027, meaning candidates must be born not earlier than 2 January 1997 and not later than 1 January 2006. Relaxation in the upper age limit is available as follows:

The date of birth accepted by the Commission is the one recorded in the Matriculation or Secondary School Leaving Certificate, and no request for change of date of birth is entertained once it is submitted in the application form.

Selection Process

Selection to the Engineering Services Examination 2027 takes place in three stages:

• Stage I - Preliminary Examination (Objective Type): 500 marks. Only candidates declared qualified are admitted to the Main Examination, and the number admitted is about six to seven times the approximate number of vacancies.
• Stage II - Main Examination (Conventional Type): 600 marks, based on the Engineering discipline chosen by the candidate.
• Stage III - Personality Test / Interview: 200 marks, with no separate minimum qualifying marks. Candidates are called for this stage in a number about twice the vacancies to be filled.

The marks scored in all three stages, that is Preliminary, Main and Personality Test, are added together to determine the final order of merit and the eventual allocation of services.

There is negative marking in the objective type papers of the Preliminary Examination only. For every wrongly answered question, one-third of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. Giving more than one answer to a question is also treated as a wrong answer, while a question left unanswered attracts no penalty. The Personality Test/Interview carries 200 marks separately, taking the combined maximum for final merit to 1,300 marks.

How To Apply For UPSC Engineering Services Examination 2027

1. Visit the official UPSC online application portal at upsconline.nic.in.
2. Create an account and generate your Universal Registration Number (URN) if you are a first-time applicant, or log in with your existing URN.
3. Complete the Common Application Form (CAF) with your personal, educational and category details.
4. Fill the Examination Specific Module (Part IV) by selecting your engineering discipline category and examination centre.
5. Upload your scanned photograph and signature, and complete the live photo capture as instructed on the portal.
6. Pay the application fee of Rs 200 through net banking, credit or debit card, or UPI, unless you are exempted.
7. Verify all the entered details carefully and submit the application before 6 October 2026, 6:00 PM.
8. Save or print the system-generated Application Number and URN for future reference.

Once submitted, the application cannot be withdrawn and no field in the form can be corrected, except through the one-time facility to update the URN profile, which will not change details already submitted in earlier applications.

Important Instructions

• The online application, once submitted, cannot be withdrawn under any circumstances.
• No correction, alteration or modification is allowed in the submitted form, apart from the one-time URN profile update facility.
• The e-Admit Card will be issued only through the Commission's website; no admit card is sent by post.
• Entry into the examination venue closes 30 minutes before the start of each session.
