If suitable candidates are not available to fill the Level-5/4 vacancies in a particular discipline, those posts will be filled from Level-3/2 in the same discipline. Similarly, a position in one Game or Event will not be filled with a candidate found suitable for a different position in that same Game or Event.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

The educational qualification must be from a Government-recognised institution, and no relaxation in the minimum qualification is permissible. Candidates awaiting the result of their final examination, or expecting to appear for it, are not eligible to apply. Candidates appointed as Clerk-cum-Typist must acquire a typing speed of 30 words per minute in English or 25 words per minute in Hindi within four years of appointment.

Sports Achievement Norms

This recruitment is driven mainly by sports performance rather than academic marks alone. Achievements must fall on or after 01-04-2024 and up to the date of the notification, and the sportsperson must be an active player. Broadly, the minimum norms are:

• Level-5 or 4: At least 3rd position in the World Cup (Junior, Youth, or Senior), World Championships, Asian Games (Senior), Commonwealth Games (Senior), Youth Olympics, or Champions Trophy (Hockey).
• Level-3 or 2: Representation of the country in the above Category-B events, or at least 3rd position in Commonwealth Championships, Asian Championships or Asia Cup, South Asian Federation Games, USIC (World Railways) Championships, World University Games, Senior or Junior National Championships, National Games, All India Inter University Championships, or first position in the Federation Cup (Senior).
• Level-1: Representation of the country in Category-C events listed above, or at least 3rd position in the Federation Cup (Senior), or representation of a State or equivalent unit with at least 8th position in Senior National Championships (except Marathon and Cross Country). Candidates with 3rd position in Youth or Junior National Championships, National Games, or All India Inter University Championships are also eligible.

A candidate who qualifies for a higher Pay Level may also apply for a lower Level, but will be considered only for the Level actually applied for and must submit an undertaking not to claim a higher Level later on the strength of achievements obtained before joining Railways. Sport-specific relaxed norms also apply in certain disciplines, such as Athletics, Cricket (under BCCI-recognised tournaments), Hockey, and Volleyball, as detailed in the official notification. As per Railway Board letter RBE 118/2025 dated 24-11-2025, recruitment will be based only on certificates issued by recognised National Sports Federations for achievements recognised at the time of the championship.

Age Limit

Candidates should be between 18 and 25 years as on 01-01-2027, that is, born between 02-01-2002 and 01-01-2009 (both dates inclusive). No age relaxation, either upper or lower, is permissible for any category. The date of birth entered in the application must match the SSC, SSLC, Matriculation, 10th class, or equivalent certificate; any mismatch will lead to disqualification, and once the date of birth is recorded, no change will be entertained afterwards.

Pay Scale

The specific Pay Level and place of posting will be decided by the Southern Railway administration based on availability of posts, educational qualification, sports achievements, and the marks obtained during the recruitment process. Selected candidates will be placed only at the minimum pay of the respective Level.

Selection Process

Selection is based on performance in trials, assessment of sports achievements, and educational qualification. All eligible candidates will be called for trials to assess sports performance and suitability; the schedule, venue, and timing will be announced later on the RRC Chennai website, and candidates may have to appear at short notice. Original documents relating to date of birth, educational qualification, community, and sports achievements must be produced on the day of document verification and trials.

Marks Distribution

In the trials, the committee rates each candidate as FIT or NOT FIT out of a maximum 40 marks. A candidate scoring 25 marks or more is declared FIT and moves to assessment by the Recruitment Committee; those scoring below 25 are declared NOT FIT and are not considered further.

Minimum Qualifying Marks

Appointment offers are made purely on merit and subject to availability of vacancies. If two candidates score equal marks, preference goes to the younger candidate. Selection is also subject to the sportsperson being suitable to fit into the Southern Railway sports team, and a minimum medical fitness standard applicable to the post.

General Rules

• No post is exclusively reserved for any community such as OBC, SC, or ST.
