What Is the Cultural Quota Recruitment?
Most railway vacancies are filled through general recruitment, but the Cultural Quota is meant for people who bring a proven talent in the arts. The notice describes it as recruitment of candidates who have cultural norms, and it says plainly that candidates are chosen partly on a live practical demonstration and partly on certificates and awards that confirm their talent.
This round is small. Only two posts are on offer, and each discipline has exactly one seat. That makes the talent test and the supporting certificates far more important than they would be in a large recruitment, so it is worth preparing your documents as carefully as your performance.

| 2 | Mridangam | 1 | Degree, diploma or certificate in Mridangam from any Government recognized institute |

The notice does not state a rupee pay figure, only the pay level, so check the official notification or the Railway pay matrix for exact amounts. It also states that no post is exclusively reserved for OBC or SC/ST candidates. Those categories still get the relaxations that apply in general open market recruitment.
Educational and Professional Qualification
There are two layers to eligibility here: a minimum educational qualification and a professional qualification in the art form. Both are measured on the date the online application closes, and candidates who are still waiting for the result of the final qualifying examination are not eligible and are told not to apply.
Essential Minimum Educational Qualification
Para 2.0 of the notice gives three routes, any one of which is accepted:
- Passed 12th (+2 stage) or equivalent with at least 50 percent marks in aggregate, for NTPC categories.
- Matriculation plus a completed Act Apprenticeship approved by NCVT or SCVT, for technician categories.
- Matriculation plus ITI approved by NCVT or SCVT, for technician categories.
The 50 percent condition is not insisted on for SC, ST, ex-servicemen and Persons with Disabilities (PwD), or for candidates who hold a qualification higher than the minimum. The notice does not say which of the three routes maps to the Classical Dance and Mridangam posts, so candidates who are unsure should read para 2.0 of the official notice closely. The notice also carries a general line that a person appointed as Clerk-cum-Typist must reach typing proficiency of 30 w.p.m. in English or 25 w.p.m. in Hindi within two years, but that category is not among the two posts listed here.
Essential Professional Qualification
For Classical Dance, a degree, diploma or certificate in any Indian Classical Dance from a Government recognized institute. For Mridangam, a degree, diploma or certificate in Mridangam from any Government recognized institute. Candidates with no professional qualification as per para 1.4 need not apply.
Desirable Qualification
- A valid certificate showing experience in the field and performance given on AIR, Doordarshan and similar platforms.
- A valid certificate showing prizes won in competitions held at national level by the concerned academy or recognized by the Government.
These are listed as desirable, not essential, but they are exactly the kind of testimonials that feed into the 15 marks given for confirmation of talent.
Age Limit and Relaxation
The age limit is 18 to 30 years, counted as on 01 January 2027. The notice also gives date-of-birth limits, both dates inclusive:
| Category | Not Born Before | Not Born After |
|---|---|---|
| UR | 02 January 1997 | 01 January 2009 |
| OBC Non Creamy Layer | 02 January 1994 | 01 January 2009 |
| SC / ST | 02 January 1992 | 01 January 2009 |
Upper Age Relaxation
| Category | Relaxation or Maximum Upper Age |
|---|---|
| SC / ST candidates | 5 years |
| OBC Non Creamy Layer candidates | 3 years |
| Ex-servicemen with more than 6 months service after attestation | Service rendered in Defence plus 3 years |
| Persons with Disabilities (40 percent and above) | UR 10 years, OBC Non Creamy Layer 13 years, SC/ST 15 years |
| Candidates domiciled in Jammu and Kashmir from 01/01/1980 to 31/12/1989 | 5 years |
| Serving Group C and erstwhile Group D Railway staff, casual labour and substitutes with at least 3 years service | Maximum age 40 years (UR), 43 years (OBC Non Creamy Layer), 45 years (SC/ST) |
| Employees of quasi-administrative offices of the Railway such as canteens, co-operative societies and institutes | Length of service rendered or 5 years, whichever is lower |
| Widowed, divorced or judicially separated women who have not remarried | Maximum age 35 years (UR), 38 years (OBC Non Creamy Layer), 40 years (SC/ST) |
Relaxation is given only if the requisite certificate is uploaded with the application. The date of birth that counts is the one on the 10th standard, matriculation or secondary examination certificate (or equivalent). Any mismatch leads to disqualification, and once a date of birth has been claimed and recorded, it cannot be changed later for any reason. OBC candidates must upload a community certificate that clearly states they are not in the creamy layer, otherwise they are treated as UR.
Application Fee and Refund
| Category | Fee | Refund |
|---|---|---|
| All candidates except those in the next row | Rs. 500 | Rs. 400 to eligible candidates who appear in the written test or CBT, after bank charges |
| SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwD (40 percent and above), women, minorities and Economically Backward Class | Rs. 250 | Same amount to eligible candidates who appear in the written test or CBT, after bank charges |
For this notice, minorities means Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Zoroastrians (Parsis). Minority candidates must upload a self declaration with the application and later furnish a minority community declaration affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper at document verification, or their candidature will be rejected. Economically Backward Class means a family income below Rs. 50,000 per annum, and the income certificate in the prescribed format must be uploaded and produced in original at document verification.
The notice lists who may issue the income certificate: a District Magistrate or revenue officer up to Tehsildar level, a sitting Lok Sabha MP for people of their own constituency, a sitting Rajya Sabha MP for people of the districts where they normally reside, a BPL card or similar Central Government poverty alleviation certificate (or an Izzat MST issued by Railways), or a Union Minister's recommendation.
Payment Rules
- Fee is paid online only, through the payment gateway built into the application, after you check your details.
- Debit card, credit card and internet banking are accepted, and any transaction charges are borne by the candidate.
- An e-receipt is generated on success and should be saved or printed. If a transaction fails, pay again.
- Give correct beneficiary bank details in the form, since refunds go to that account.
- Fees of candidates found ineligible are not refunded, and the processing fee is not refundable or transferable under any circumstances.
- Cash, cheque, Central Recruitment Fee Stamps or money orders are not accepted.
Selection Process and Marks
Recruitment is based on a Written Test or Computer Based Test (CBT), followed by a Practical Demonstration and Document Verification. Candidates recommended for appointment must pass a medical examination and meet the medical fitness prescribed for the post.
| Stage | Marks |
|---|---|
| Written Test or CBT (objective type, 1 hour) | 50 |
| Talent Test in the relevant field with Practical Demonstration | 35 |
| Confirmation of Talent by Testimonials, Certificates and Awards | 15 |
| Total | 100 |
Written Test or CBT
The questions are objective with multiple choices and may cover General Knowledge, Arithmetic and Cultural Subjects. The paper can be taken in Hindi or English, and you must pick one in the application form. One third of a question's marks is cut for each wrong answer. To qualify, UR candidates need 40 percent, OBC and SC candidates 30 percent, and ST candidates 25 percent.
Practical Demonstration and Document Verification
Candidates who qualify in the written test or CBT, as per merit, are called for the practical demonstration and document verification. You must bring your own musical instrument, because the Railway Administration will not provide one. Dates, times and venues are fixed by RRC Chennai and displayed on its website, and requests for postponement will not be entertained.

Southern Railway has also cautioned job seekers about racketeers who promise jobs through influence. It states that it has not appointed any agents or training agencies and that all its recruitments are purely merit based.
