RRB-wise Vacancy Distribution

The 3993 vacancies are spread across all 21 Railway Recruitment Boards. Candidates can apply to only one RRB of their choice, and within it, indicate their preference for Railway Zones and posts. The table below shows the total vacancies notified by each RRB.

Category-wise, the 3993 vacancies include 1699 for Unreserved, 624 for SC, 363 for ST, 913 for OBC-NCL and 394 for EWS candidates. Within this total, 387 vacancies are reserved for Ex-Servicemen and 193 are backlog vacancies for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities across visual, hearing, locomotor and other categories. Detailed post-wise and zone-wise vacancy figures are available in Annexure B of the official CEN, and these numbers are provisional and may increase or decrease as per the requirement of the Railway Administration.

Post-wise Overview

CEN No. 04/2026 notifies 37 categories of Junior Engineer spread across the Electrical, Engineering (Civil), Mechanical, Signal and Telecom and Stores departments, along with the post of Depot Material Superintendent. Junior Engineer postings include sub-departments such as Design, Production Unit, Workshop, EMU, TRD, TRS, P. Way, Bridge, Works, Track Machine, Carriage and Wagon, Diesel Shed, Signal and Telecommunication. All posts carry Pay Level 6 with an initial pay of ₹35,400, and the medical standard required (A-3, B-1, B-2 or C-1) varies by post as listed in Annexure A of the notification.

Eligibility Criteria

Nationality

A candidate must be a citizen of India, a citizen of Nepal, a subject of Bhutan, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from specified countries with the intention of permanently settling in India. Candidates in the last two categories need a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

Educational Qualification

The qualification depends on the specific post and department. In general, candidates need a three-year Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Civil, or related engineering disciplines from a recognised university or institute, and in some categories, a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology is accepted as the qualifying route as well. For Depot Material Superintendent, a three-year Diploma in Engineering in any discipline is accepted. Candidates must hold the qualification on or before 13.09.2026, and those awaiting final results are not eligible to apply.

Age Limit

The age limit is 18 to 33 years, reckoned as on 01.01.2027. The date of birth must fall between 02.01.1994 and 01.01.2009 for UR and EWS candidates, with different upper limits for OBC-NCL and SC/ST candidates as shown below.

Age relaxation of 5 years applies to SC/ST candidates, 3 years to OBC-NCL candidates, and further relaxation is available for Ex-Servicemen, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, serving Railway staff and certain categories of women, as detailed in the official notification.

Application Fee

Fee can be paid only through internet banking, debit card, credit card or UPI. Applications submitted without the prescribed fee are summarily rejected, and no fee is refunded for incomplete or rejected applications.

Pay Scale

All posts under this notification carry Pay Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission, with an initial pay of ₹35,400 per month, apart from allowances admissible as per Railway rules.

Selection Process

Recruitment to Junior Engineer and Depot Material Superintendent posts happens in four stages:

• 1st Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-I) — a screening test common to all notified posts
• 2nd Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-II) — based on the candidate's exam group and educational qualification
• Document Verification (DV)
• Medical Examination (ME)

Candidates are shortlisted for CBT-II based on normalised marks in CBT-I, at 15 times the community-wise vacancy in the chosen RRB. Shortlisting for Document Verification is based on merit in CBT-II, and the number of candidates called is equal to the number of vacancies. Final empanelment depends on merit, successful document verification and passing the prescribed medical fitness test.

Exam Pattern

CBT-I (90 minutes, 100 questions)

CBT-II (120 minutes, 150 questions)

There is negative marking of one-third of the marks allotted to each question for a wrong answer in both stages. The minimum qualifying percentage is 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC-NCL and SC, and 25% for ST, with relaxation of up to 2 marks for PwBD candidates where required. A virtual calculator is available on screen during CBT-II.

Scribe Assistance for PwBD Candidates

Candidates with benchmark disabilities such as blindness, both-arm locomotor disability and cerebral palsy can use a scribe if they wish. Other categories of PwBD candidates can avail scribe assistance on producing a certificate from a Government Medical Officer confirming a physical limitation to write. Candidates must arrange their own scribe, ensure the scribe is registered on the RRB portal, and enter the scribe's One-Time Registration number during the designated window from 26.09.2026 to 30.09.2026. A compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour of examination is also available to eligible candidates, whether or not they use a scribe.

How to Apply

1. Visit the official website of the RRB you wish to apply to and create an account for CEN No. 04/2026, filling in your name, date of birth, mobile number and email ID carefully, as these fields cannot be changed later.
2. Log in and complete the online application form with your educational, personal and category details, then select your preferred Railway Zones and posts within your chosen RRB.
3. Capture your live photograph through the application module and upload a scanned signature in JPG or JPEG format as per the specified size and dimensions.
4. Pay the examination fee online through internet banking, debit card, credit card or UPI.
5. Review the application and submit it. Note down the registration number, and use the modification window from 16.09.2026 to 25.09.2026 if any correction is required, on payment of the modification fee.

Candidates can also use the services of Common Services Centres (CSC) across the country to submit their application and pay the fee.

Documents Required

• Scanned signature in JPG/JPEG format (30 KB to 49 KB, minimum 140 x 60 pixels)
• SC/ST certificate in PDF format, for candidates seeking free train travel for the exam
• Valid Photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter ID, PAN, driving licence, passport, or institutional ID) for the exam day

Reservation

Vertical reservation is provided for EWS, SC, ST and OBC-NCL candidates as per extant rules, and horizontal reservation is provided for Ex-Servicemen and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities. Economically Backward Class (EBC) candidates, with family income below ₹50,000 a year, are eligible only for fee concession and not for job reservation. Candidates claiming reservation must submit the relevant certificate in the prescribed format at the time of Document Verification, failing which their claim will not be considered and their candidature will be treated as Unreserved, subject to eligibility.

General Rules

• A candidate can apply to only one RRB with one common application. Multiple applications to different RRBs, or the same RRB, lead to rejection of all applications and debarment from future RRB and RRC examinations.
• The Apply Online link, e-call letters and results will be published on the official websites of the concerned RRBs from time to time.
• Details filled in the 'Create an Account' form, including mobile number, email ID and chosen RRB, cannot be modified at any stage.
• Candidates should note their Registration Number carefully for all further stages of the recruitment process.
• RRBs reserve the right to change vacancies, cancel or reschedule any stage, and their decision on eligibility, selection and allotment of posts is final and binding.
