Age Limit as on 01.01.2026
| Category | Minimum | Maximum | Relaxation |
|---|---|---|---|
| UR/General | 18 | 37 | None |
| SC of Punjab | 18 | 37 | 5 years |
| BC/OBC of Punjab | 18 | 37 | 5 years |
| PwBD of Punjab | 18 | 37 | 10 years |
| Ex-Servicemen of Punjab | 18 | Years of military service plus 3 years | - |
| In-service employees | 18 | 45 | As per 1997 Rules |
The 45 year limit applies to people already working for the Punjab or Haryana Government, another State Government, the Government of India, the High Court, other Subordinate Courts or the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Such applicants should obtain a No Objection Certificate from their Head of Office and keep it with them, because failing to produce it when asked will cancel the candidature.
Disqualification and Residency
A person who has married someone with a living spouse, or who has a living spouse and married again, is not eligible, unless the High Court exempts the person where the personal law permits such a marriage. Age relaxation, fee concession and reservation are given only to residents of Punjab, so reserved category applicants from other states must apply under the Un-reserved (UR)/General category.
Pay Scale
For fresh appointments on or after 17.07.2020, the Clerk pay scale in the District Courts of Punjab is Rs. 29,200 (level 5) for graduates. This comes from the Punjab Government letter dated 12.09.2024, which the High Court has adopted for Subordinate Courts staff.
Selection Process
Selection has three stages, and the final merit list depends on the first one alone.
- Computer Based Test (CBT) - an online written exam of 2 hours.
- Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) - qualifying only, for the number of candidates category-wise decided by the High Court.
- Original testimonials check/interaction - for those who clear both tests.
The select list is prepared strictly on merit in the CBT. If marks are tied, the older candidate ranks higher, and if the date of birth is also the same, names are placed alphabetically (A-Z).
Exam Pattern
| Subject | Type | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Knowledge | Objective | 50 questions of 1 mark each | 50 |
| English Composition | Objective | 20 questions of 1 mark each | 20 |
| English Composition | Subjective | Essay (150 words) 10, Letter 5, Precis 5, Translation from Punjabi to English 10 | 30 |
| Total | 100 |
Qualifying marks are 33 percent in each subject and 40 percent in aggregate. There is negative marking of 1/4 mark for each wrong multiple choice answer. The subjective part must be typed on the computer within the time given, and it is checked only for candidates who score 33 percent or more in General Knowledge. If the test runs in multiple shifts, marks of the objective portion are normalized using the standard deviation method.
Computer Proficiency Test
Part I is a Spreadsheet Test of 10 marks and 10 minutes, where you need at least 4 marks. Part II is a Computer Typing Test in English at 30 words per minute, and it is checked only for those who clear Part I. Marks of this test are not added to the final merit.
Persons with Benchmark Disabilities can apply for exemption with a disability certificate, and in most cases a medical certificate from a Government healthcare institution too, within 15 days of the written exam result. The Competent Authority decides on the exemption.
Answer Key and Objections
A provisional answer key will be put on the official website, and candidates can raise objections at Rs. 25 per objection, which is non-refundable. Each objection needs the proposed correct answer, reasons and documentary proof. Re-evaluation of answer sheets is not allowed, but re-checking is possible on a written request with Rs. 500 per answer sheet, within thirty days of the final result.
