Eligibility Conditions

Educational Qualification

  • Rigger: Minimum 50 percent aggregate in Class 8.
  • Crane Operator Overhead (SI): Minimum 50 percent aggregate in Class 10.
  • All other 30 trades: Minimum 50 percent aggregate in relevant subjects in Class 10, followed by minimum 50 percent aggregate in the consolidated marks of all ITI semesters, in the respective NCVT or SCVT trade.

Candidates from boards that use grade points must get their grades converted into percentage marks. If no conversion is available, the lowest percentage of that grade point band is used for shortlisting.

Matching Your ITI Trade

ITI holders can also apply for corresponding NCVT approved trades listed in Schedule I of the Apprentices Rules, 1992. For example, a Turner or a Tool and Die Maker certificate holder can apply for the Machinist trade. Check the match before you apply.

Previous Training

Anyone already undergoing apprenticeship in a government, public sector or private organisation must terminate that contract before applying, and must have completed any cooling-off period that applies.

Age Limit, Training Period and Stipend

The Apprentices Act, 1961 sets no upper age limit for apprenticeship training. Only a minimum age applies, counted on the crucial date, which is the closing date of online applications. Stipend is paid monthly under MSDE guideline DGT-36/1/2021-AP dated 15 Sep 2025.

Reserved vacancies are filled from eligible SC, ST and OBC (NCL) candidates, and a reserved candidate who is lower in merit than the last UR candidate can still be selected. Horizontal reservation covers PwBD and ex-servicemen categories: children of deceased or disabled ex-servicemen including those killed in peace time, children of ex-servicemen, children of serving jawans, children of serving officers, and ex-servicemen themselves.

PwBD candidates must hold a disability certificate issued before applying, in the format under Rule 18(1) of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment notification dated 15 Jun 2017. The suitable benchmark disability groups are Group A (LD, CP, LC, DW, AAV), Group B (B, LV), Group C (D, HH), Group D (ASD, ID, SLD, MI) and Group E (MD). Scribe facility is available on certificate and rules differ for candidates with disability of 40 percent and above and those below 40 percent.

Selection Process

Stage 1: Shortlisting

The dockyard will not scrutinise applications in detail at the time of applying, so a candidate is accepted only provisionally. If applications are far more than the vacancies, shortlisting will be done in the ratio of 1:25 per vacancy in each trade and category. Merit gives equal weightage (50:50) to Class 10 marks and ITI consolidated marks. For Crane Operator the weightage is 100 percent Class 10 marks, and for Rigger it is 100 percent Class 8 marks.

Stage 2: Written Examination

The test is objective, in OMR format and bilingual (English and Hindi), with 100 questions of one mark each. Questions follow the Class 10 syllabus for all trades, except Rigger, which follows the Class 8 syllabus. The exam is likely to be held in one shift on one day in Mumbai and nearby districts such as Thane and Kandivali.

Subject Maximum Marks Duration
General Science 35 2 Hours
Mathematics 35 2 Hours
General Knowledge 30 2 Hours
Total 100 2 Hours

Tie-Breaking Order

If marks are equal, the merit list is drawn using written exam marks first, then the older date of birth, then alphabetical order of the first name.

Stage 3: Document Verification and Medical

Original documents uploaded on the portal will be verified by Dockyard Apprentice School, and dates will be shared by e-mail with selected candidates.

Documents to Keep Ready

  • Photograph: Passport size colour photo with plain white background, not older than three months, full face coverage, 3.5 cm by 4.5 cm, JPEG between 50 and 100 KB
