About Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS)
Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan is a premier educational institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. KVS runs a large network of central schools primarily to serve the children of transferable Central Government employees. KVS Admission 2026-27 is open to all categories of students, not just central government employees. Certain priorities have been set to regulate the admission process fairly.
These KVS Admission Guidelines 2026-27 supersede all earlier guidelines. They do not apply to KVS schools located abroad or Dr. Rajendra Prasad Kendriya Vidyalaya, President Estate, New Delhi.
Eligible Age for KVS Admission 2026-27
Every child must meet the age requirement as on 31st March of the year in which admission is sought. Children born on 1st April are also considered for Class 1. The age limit for Children with Special Needs (CwSN) can be relaxed by 2 years. There is no age limit for Class 11 (if taking admission in the year of passing Class 10) and Class 12.

Priority Categories in KVS Admission 2026
KVS follows a defined priority system for granting admission. This applies to both Civil/Defence Sector and Project/IHL Sector schools. Preference within the same category is given based on the number of transfers of parents in the last 7 years.
Civil and Defence Sector KVs
- Priority 1: Children of Transferable and Non-transferable Central Government Employees and Ex-servicemen
- Priority 2: Children of employees of Central Autonomous Bodies, PSUs, and Institutes of Higher Learning
- Priority 3: Children of State Government employees (transferable and non-transferable)
- Priority 4: Children of State Autonomous Bodies, PSUs, and IHL employees
- Priority 5: All other children not covered in above categories
Project Sector and IHL KVs
- Priority 1: Children of sponsoring Project/IHL employees, faculty, post-graduate students on long-term projects, COW employees, retired employees, and directly hired contractual employees
- Priority 2: Children of Central Government Employees and Ex-servicemen
- Priority 3: Children of Central Autonomous Bodies, PSUs, and IHL employees
- Priority 4: Children of State Government Employees
- Priority 5: Children of State Autonomous Bodies, PSUs, and IHL employees
- Priority 6: All other children
Reservation in KVS Admission 2026-27
The following reservation norms are applicable within the approved class strength of 40 students per section for fresh admissions in Class 1:

Class Strength and Admission Authority
The maximum class strength and the authority responsible for granting admission are as follows:

Note: The upper limit for Class 1, 2, and 3 is 40 for session 2026-27. This will be progressively extended to Class 4 in 2027-28, and so on.
Documents Required for KVS Admission 2026
All documents should be self-attested and submitted along with the application form. The following documents are required:
- Birth Certificate (for Class 1) - issued by Municipality, Village Panchayat, Military Hospital, or competent authority
- Transfer Certificate from the previous school (for Classes 2 to 12) - must be from a school recognized by the State Education Department
- Caste Certificate for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/BPL as applicable - certificate in the name of parent is acceptable initially; child's certificate must be submitted within 3 months
- CwSN Certificate from Civil Surgeon or Rehabilitation Centre if the child has special needs
- Service Certificate showing number of transfers in the last 7 years - must be signed and stamped by Head of Office
- Retirement Certificate for uniformed Defence employees
- Proof of Residence - mandatory for all applicants
Important Note: Admissions secured on the basis of any wrong information or certificate will be cancelled by the Principal. The address submitted during application is treated as final for determining neighbourhood. No change of address will be entertained after the provisional admission list is released, except for government employees shifting to government accommodation.
Method of Admission Class-Wise
Class 1 Admission Method
Admission to Class 1 is done entirely through online registration followed by a draw of lots. No admission test is conducted for Class 1. The lottery is held in the following sequence:
- First: RTE Lottery (10 seats from neighbourhood SC/ST/EWS/BPL/OBC-NCL/CwSN children)
- Second: CwSN Lottery (across all categories)
- Third: Priority Category 1 and 2 (up to sanctioned strength)
- Fourth: Shortfall SC/ST/OBC-NCL seats filled if not already covered
- Fifth: Priority Category 3 onwards for remaining unreserved seats
Class 2 to 8 Admission Method
No admission test is conducted. Admission is granted to fill vacant seats as per priority category of parents.
Class 9 Admission Method
An admission test is conducted. It is a single paper of 3 hours duration and 100 marks, covering Hindi, English, Mathematics, Social Science, and Science (20 marks each). A candidate must secure minimum 33% marks in aggregate. SC/ST/CwSN candidates need only 25% marks.
Class 11 Admission Method (KV Students)
Admission to Science, Commerce, and Humanities streams is based on merit. Stream allotment is based on marks obtained in Class 10 CBSE Board Examination. Class strength is restricted to a maximum of 50 for KV students. Non-KV students may be admitted only after all eligible KV and CBSE students have been considered.

Special Provisions in KVS Admission 2026-27
The following categories of children can be admitted over and above the class strength:
- Children of serving KVS employees (from KVs, Regional Offices, ZIETs, and KVS HQ)
- Children of Central Government employees who died in service
- Children of recipients of Paramveer Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Veer Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and other gallantry awards
- Children of recipients of President's Police Medal for gallantry
- Meritorious sports children securing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd position in Khelo India/SGFI/CBSE/National/State level games
- Recipients of Rashtrapati Puraskar in Scouts and Guides
- Children who received National Bravery Award, Bal Shree Award, or Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar
- Children with special talent in Fine Arts recognized at National or State level including Kala Utsav winners
- Children orphaned due to Covid-19 under PM CARES for Children Scheme (maximum 10 per KV, 2 per class) - exempt from tuition and other fees
- Wards of Kashmir Migrants (30-day extension + SC/ST level cut-off relaxation)
Registration Process for KVS Admission 2026
Registration will not be accepted if there is no vacancy in that class. For Class 1, online registration through the KVS Admission Portal is mandatory. For all other classes, registration is done in offline mode at the Kendriya Vidyalaya concerned. Registration forms are available free of cost.
Key points to remember:
- Incomplete application forms are normally rejected
- Mere registration does not guarantee admission
- If multiple forms are submitted for the same child at the same KV, only the last application is considered
- In a double-shift KV, each shift is treated as a separate school for admission purposes
- The address submitted during registration is final for neighbourhood determination

KVS Admission 2026 - Fee Concessions
- No fee is charged from children admitted under the 25% RTE quota
- Children admitted under RTE in Class 1 continue to get fee exemptions (tuition fee, computer fund, VVN) up to Class 8
- Children orphaned due to Covid-19 (under PM CARES) are exempt from fees for Classes 1 to 12
- Government employees who have fee reimbursement facility in their departments cannot claim RTE concessions
