Selection Process

Selection for both Technical Assistant and Technical Officer posts follows the same broad structure.

  • Applications are first screened by a Screening Committee against the eligibility criteria for each post code.
  • Shortlisted candidates are called for a Trade Test in the relevant area or discipline, which is qualifying in nature.
  • Candidates who qualify the Trade Test appear for a competitive written examination consisting of three papers, Paper-I, Paper-II and Paper-III.
  • Paper-II and Paper-III are evaluated only for candidates who secure the minimum threshold marks fixed by the Selection Committee in Paper-I.
  • The final merit list is prepared solely on the basis of marks scored in Paper-II and Paper-III.

In case two or more candidates end up with equal aggregate marks, the tie is resolved in order of preference by marks in the concerned subject papers, fewer negative marks, older date of birth, earlier date of acquiring the essential qualification, and finally alphabetical order of first name.

Written Examination Pattern

The written examination is an OMR based or computer based objective type multiple choice test, with questions set in both English and Hindi except for the English language paper. It carries 200 questions for a total of 3 hours, split into three papers.

Paper Subject Questions Marks Duration Negative Marking
Paper-I Mental Ability Test (General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, Problem Solving, Situational Judgement) 50 100 1 hour None
Paper-II General Awareness and English Language (25 questions each) 50 150 30 minutes 1 mark per wrong answer
Paper-III Concerned Subject 100 300 90 minutes 1 mark per wrong answer

The standard of the paper is at Graduation level for the Technical Assistant post and at Post-Graduation or BTech level for Technical Officer posts, based on the qualification advertised for that post. The minimum threshold marks for the Trade Test and for Paper-I will be notified separately on the CSIR-NEERI website before the written examination.
