Age Relaxation Rules
Relaxation is not the same for every post, which is the part most applicants miss. The table below shows which concessions apply where.
| Category | Technical Officer | Technician (1) | MTS | Security Officer | Security Assistant |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PwBD (10 years) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Not available | Not available |
| Ex-Servicemen | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Departmental, Government or PSU employees (5 years) | Yes | Yes | Not available | Not available | Not available |
| Widows, divorced and judicially separated women | Not available | Yes | Yes | Not available | Not available |
- SC, ST and OBC (NCL) candidates get age relaxation as per Government rules, but not when they apply against unreserved posts. They are still exempt from the fee in that case if they are SC or ST.
- Ex-Servicemen can deduct their actual military service from their age, and the result must not exceed the upper limit by more than 3 years.
- Persons with Benchmark Disabilities get 10 years of relaxation, which becomes 15 years in total for SC and ST and 13 years for OBC candidates. The Security Officer and Security Assistant posts have not been identified as suitable for any benchmark disability.
- Departmental candidates need 3 years of continuous service in a same-line or allied post and a certificate from the employer issued after the date of the advertisement.

Candidates must hold the essential qualification on the last date of application, from a recognised university or institution. Where a degree is claimed as equivalent, the order or notification that treats it as equivalent must be produced.

How Each Post Is Filled
There is no single exam for this recruitment. Screening on qualification and age comes first for the Technical Officer, Technician (1), Security Officer and Security Assistant posts, and the screening committee may use its own criteria to shortlist candidates, so meeting the minimum qualification does not guarantee a call. Multi-Tasking Staff candidates go straight to the written test.
Technical Officer
Shortlisted candidates take a qualifying Trade Test, the marks of which are not counted for merit. Those who clear it sit a 200-question OMR or computer-based objective exam of 3 hours at post graduate diploma, post graduation or B.E. and B.Tech level. Paper II and Paper III are checked only if the candidate reaches the minimum mark in Paper I, and the merit list is made from Paper II and Paper III alone.
| Paper | Subject | Questions | Maximum Marks | Time | Negative Marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper I | Mental Ability Test | 50 | 100 | 1 hour | None |
| Paper II | General Awareness | 25 | 75 | 30 minutes | 1 mark per wrong answer |
| Paper II | English Language | 25 | 75 | 30 minutes | 1 mark per wrong answer |
| Paper III | Concerned Subject | 100 | 300 | 90 minutes | 1 mark per wrong answer |
Technician (1)
The route is similar, but the written test is shorter and set at SSC plus ITI or 12th standard level. It has 150 questions to be solved in 2 hours 30 minutes, and the merit list is again based on Paper II and Paper III. The syllabus for the Trade Test and Paper III is published on the CSIR-AMPRI website.
| Paper | Subject | Questions | Maximum Marks | Time | Negative Marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper I | Mental Ability Test | 50 | 100 | 1 hour | None |
| Paper II | General Awareness | 25 | 75 | 30 minutes | 1 mark per wrong answer |
| Paper II | English Language | 25 | 75 | 30 minutes | 1 mark per wrong answer |
| Paper III | Concerned Subject | 50 | 150 | 1 hour | 1 mark per wrong answer |
Security Officer
Candidates first appear for the physical test described in the next section. Those who pass are called for a written examination at graduate level, in two papers. Paper I is an objective test of 100 questions carrying 100 marks in 90 minutes with no negative marking, and its qualifying threshold is 30 percent. Paper II is a subjective paper of 2 hours and 100 marks, split equally into Comprehension, Report Writing, Security Regulations and Fire Fighting, and General Awareness. The threshold for Paper II is fixed by the selection committee at not less than 35 percent, and the final merit list is based on Paper II.
Security Assistant
Stage I is a qualifying Skill, Physical and Personality Assessment Test with the same height, chest and physical event standards as the Security Officer post, along with a 100-question objective paper of 1 hour 30 minutes at Class 12 level with no negative marking and a threshold of at least 30 percent. Stage II is a subjective written examination of 100 marks in 2 hours, covering Comprehension, Report Writing, Security Regulations and Fire Fighting, and General Awareness. The merit list comes from Stage II, with a threshold of at least 35 percent.
Multi-Tasking Staff
This is the simplest route, a single competitive written paper at Class 10 level with four parts and 150 questions. The time is 2 hours, or 2 hours 40 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe.
| Part | Questions | Maximum Marks | Negative Marking |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence | 25 | 75 | 1 mark per wrong answer |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 25 | 75 | 1 mark per wrong answer |
| General Awareness | 50 | 150 | 1 mark per wrong answer |
| English Language | 50 | 150 | 1 mark per wrong answer |
Question papers for the written tests are set in English and Hindi, except the English Language questions. If two candidates score the same marks, the notification lists a post-wise order of tie-breakers, which generally starts with fewer negative marks or higher marks in the subject paper, then moves to the older date of birth and the earlier acquisition of the essential qualification.
Physical Standards and Events for Security Posts
Security Officer and Security Assistant candidates must clear a physical test, which is conducted only once, and no re-test is allowed. Hilly area candidates are those from Garhwal, Kumaon, Himachal Pradesh, Gorkha, Dogra and Maratha communities, the Kashmir Valley, Leh and Ladakh, the North Eastern States and Sikkim.
