Under the Bihar Non-Gazetted Service (Judicial Branch) Recruitment Rules, 1955, an estimated 2 posts for Orthopaedically Handicapped (OH) candidates are available under horizontal PwBD reservation.

Eligibility Criteria – BPSC Civil Judge Vacancy 2026

Educational Qualification

Candidates must possess a Law Graduate (LLB) degree or its equivalent from a university or institution recognized by the Bar Council of India, New Delhi. Candidates must obtain a certificate from the Principal/Head of the institution or the competent authority of the university confirming that the institution was affiliated with the Bar Council of India, New Delhi during the relevant academic session.

Experience

As on the date of advertisement (23.02.2026), the candidate must have a minimum of three years of experience as a practicing lawyer at the Bar. The number of years of practice will be counted from the date of their provisional enrollment or registration with the relevant State Bar Council.

The experience certificate must be certified either by the Principal District Judge of the court where the candidate is practicing, or by a lawyer who has at least 10 years of experience and has been authorized by the Principal District Judge or the Chief Judicial Magistrate of that place.

Candidates practicing in High Courts or the Supreme Court must have their experience certified by a lawyer who has at least 10 years of experience and is authorized by the respective High Court or Supreme Court.

Important: Work experience as a Law Clerk under any Judge or Judicial Officer anywhere in India will also be counted as experience at the Bar.

BPSC Civil Judge Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2026

The BPSC 33rd Bihar Judicial Service Examination is conducted in three stages. Below is the detailed structure:

Preliminary Examination (Qualifying Stage)

The Preliminary Examination will be conducted if the number of applicants is significantly higher than the available vacancies (as per GAD notification No. 4923 dated 08.05.2008). It is a qualifying examination only and its marks are not counted in the final merit list.

The Preliminary Examination consists of objective-type (MCQ) questions with OMR answer sheets. The syllabus for both papers follows the same topics as the General Knowledge, General Science, and Law papers of the Written (Main) Examination. The minimum qualifying marks are 45% for UR/EWS and 40% for reserved categories. Candidates equal to 10 times the total vacancies will be shortlisted for the Main Examination.

Interview / Viva-Voce

Candidates who qualify the Main Written Examination will be called for an Interview/Personality Test carrying 100 marks. The minimum qualifying marks for the Interview are 35%. Attendance in the Interview is mandatory for all candidates who qualify the Written (Main) Examination. The final merit list will be prepared on the basis of total marks secured in the Main Written Examination and the Interview combined.

As per GAD notification No. 13793 dated 04.10.2019, candidates will be shortlisted for the Interview in the ratio of 1:3 against available vacancies based on Written (Main) Examination marks.

Qualifying Marks in the Main Examination

The minimum qualifying percentage for individual subjects in the Main Written Examination is as follows: UR/General category candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks in each subject. Reserved category and female candidates get a relaxation of 5 percentage points in each subject as well as in the aggregate, compared to UR male candidates. Additionally, as per GAD notification, reserved category candidates (including females and disabled) may not appear in the examination more than 5 times beyond the 5 extra chances allowed under the relaxed standards.
